Just recently the International Union for the Conservation of Nature added the migrating Monarch Butterfly to their list of “endangered” species. This is due to their dwindling numbers, which have declined up to 95% in parts of the US since the 1990's.
So what can we do to help? Did you know that the City of Rochester Hills and Mayor Barnett have taken the Mayors Monarch Pledge now for the second straight year through the National Wildlife Federation. As part of these efforts, the City has created multiple pollinator gardens that can be found in our Parks like Innovation Hills and Bloomer. Additionally, the City has established and maintained several native prairies that support pollinators like at Avon Nature Area, in front of city hall, and in several of our Green Spaces, like Harding!
But, that's not all! The City continues to promote and support local native plant sales annually and has partnered with the Clinton River Watershed Council in recent years to put on a Native Plant seed collection program where we collected Milkweed seeds to be part of other local planting projects!
