State Representative Mike Harris, R-Waterford, has been recognized by the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police as the Legislator of the Year for 2024. This accolade was awarded in recognition of his legislative efforts to support law enforcement in Michigan.

Harris, a retired Waterford police sergeant with 26 years of service, received the award at a reception held on February 6 in Grand Rapids. Rob Stevenson, the executive director of the association and a former Livonia Police Chief, highlighted Harris' contributions to backing police officers and raising awareness about policies perceived as lenient on crime.

In his acceptance remarks, Harris emphasized the challenges faced by police officers: “Day after day, police officers face danger to keep their neighbors safe from theft and violence,” he stated. He also expressed gratitude towards the association and reiterated his commitment to supporting law enforcement: “I’m grateful to the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police for the award and, more importantly, for the chiefs’ and officers’ selfless service.”

During his previous term on the House Criminal Justice Committee, Harris opposed several proposals aimed at early release for violent criminals before they served their minimum sentences. These proposals did not pass in the House. He also resisted bills that would restrict standard policing tactics.

Currently serving on the House Judiciary Committee, Harris plans to continue advocating for law enforcement this year. “I’ll always have the backs of our men and women in blue,” he affirmed. Harris assured that efforts would persist to ensure police departments receive necessary funding and resources.
