In a report from Michigan Capitol Confidential, figures show that more than one-third of all small businesses across the state of Michigan have closed, some permanently, as a result of the COVID-19 shutdowns.
Since January, the number of small businesses still open has fallen by almost 36%, which is higher than the national average of almost 29%. Clearly, the coronavirus pandemic appears to have taken its toll on Michigan business owners.
The Michigan Restaurant & Lodging Association warned that 5,000 hotels and restaurants are likely to close if the current lockdown continues, which could lead to a wider economic fallout. Michigan restaurants have been closed for indoor dining since Nov. 18, and that will continue until at least Friday, Jan. 15.
The data is sourced from marketing firm Womply, which looked at 500,000 businesses across the state. The data was shared through Opportunity Insights' website TrackTheRecovery.org, originating at Harvard University.
