Matt Maddock, a House Representative from Michigan, has accused DTE Energy of engaging in "political money laundering" to secure protection from politicians. This statement was made on the social media platform X.

"DTE is tied up with the communist party and launders money to anyone that will protect them politically," said Matthew A Maddock, State Representative from Michigan. "They throw beans at the Republicans to fake them out."

Recent controversies have emerged regarding DTE Energy's political contributions and its relationships with advocacy groups. Investigations by the Detroit Free Press revealed that DTE directed substantial funds to nonprofits involved in political activities. A report by the Michigan Campaign Finance Network indicates that DTE’s political spending is among the highest of Michigan utilities. However, transparency practices vary widely across utilities, with some disclosing more than others. This discrepancy has fueled ongoing efforts to strengthen reporting standards.
