Berkley Parks & Recreation Encourages Participation in mParks Virtual 5K

Announcement

City of Berkley issued the following announcement on Sept. 14.

Berkley’s Parks and Recreation Department is encouraging participation in the mParks “Move So Everyone Can” Virtual 5K in the month of September 2021.

The beauty of the Virtual 5K (3.1 miles) is that you can choose how to complete it - run, walk, skateboard, stand up paddleboard (SUP), bike, surf, handcycle, or swim. You also get to choose your location, your own race, go at your own pace, and time it yourself. If there’s another race you’re participating in during September, that race can also count as participation in this one. The only rule is that this Virtual 5K must be completed by Thursday, September 30, 2021.

“Berkley has a variety of beautiful parks, a walkable downtown, and neighborhoods with sidewalks, all of which are great locations to complete this virtual 5K while you explore the City of Berkley and its amenities,” said Theresa McArleton, Parks and Recreation Director. “Another optional route is the Downtown Berkley Mural Bike Ride, recently launched by MoGo. On this 3.6-mile round-trip ride, you can explore the public art throughout Berkley’s downtown!”

While participants have the entire month of September to complete the Virtual 5K, the time to sign up is now.

By filling out a short form and paying $35 (plus a small processing fee), it’s very easy to sign up. Participant perks include a participation medal and a t-shirt (sweatshirt for those able to raise $250 or more).

By partnering with mParks, the Parks and Recreation Department will receive half of the registration fees and all monies donated or raised by those who sign up to participate under “City of Berkley Parks & Recreation”. Those funds will go toward new picnic tables throughout the City parks.
