State Representative Mike Harris has been appointed by Speaker Matt Hall to serve on five legislative committees for the 2025-2026 term. Harris, a Republican from Waterford, will chair the Insurance Committee, where he previously served as vice chair during the 2023-2024 term. In his prior role, he contributed to efforts aimed at reducing insurance fraud.
Harris expressed his commitment to ensuring that residents of Michigan have access to affordable and reliable insurance with strong consumer protections. "Insurance touches every area of life in our state; it can be a financial lifeline for Michiganders when they need to see a doctor, rebuild their homes, or repair their cars," Harris stated. He emphasized his goals of expanding access to quality insurance and preventing fraud.
In addition to leading the Insurance Committee, Harris will hold positions on several other committees. He will serve as majority vice chair of the Government Operations Committee and as a member of both the Economic Competitiveness Committee and the Judiciary Committee. Furthermore, he will participate in the Legislative Council, which oversees various agencies within the Michigan Legislature.
“I’m excited to bring the voices of Oakland County residents to some of the most critical issues facing our state,” said Harris. His focus includes supporting insurance quality and affordability, improving government efficiency for taxpayers, expanding economic opportunities, and enhancing community safety.
With a background in law enforcement spanning 26 years as a police sergeant, Harris highlighted his dedication to public safety through his work on the Judiciary Committee. “The Judiciary Committee handles policy for our courts and criminal justice system,” he noted. "I’ve spent my career protecting our communities and arresting criminals."
As part of his responsibilities in House leadership, Harris serves as majority caucus whip. Since May 2022, he has represented Michigan's 52nd House District in Oakland County.
