According to Michigan Sen. Ruth Johnson (R-Holly), legislators want to finalize multiple COVID-19 bills in the aftermath of the Michigan Supreme Court's striking down Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's COVID-19 executive orders.

“These bills will continue vital unemployment benefits for those who have lost their jobs during the coronavirus pandemic,” said Johnson, according to MiSenateGOP. “Following the Supreme Court’s ruling, these measures are needed to preserve this financial lifeline for Michigan workers and families who are struggling."

Johnson added that the bills include additional protections for the state's population living in nursing facilities. Senate Bills 886 and 911 now move to Whitmer's office for finalization.

The bills would also extend Michigan unemployment benefits for an additional 26 weeks for those still out of work as a result of the pandemic.

The Michigan Legislature also approved a bill allowing local government boards and other public entities to continue to meet remotely for a limited time, as well as legislation providing liability protections to health care providers for pandemic-related services.
