Folks with small-claims disputes can have their issues resolved virtually through the Michigan Supreme Court’s Office of Dispute Resolution virtual service, MI-Resolve, according to MLive.
The service, available in 18 counties, has now been expanded to Oakland County. In addition to small claims, civil cases and landlord cases that would be filed in district court can be resolved virtually through the service, which is free.
Parties can negotiate virtually or turn to a Community Dispute Resolution Center mediator, who will be made available for assistance. The necessary paperwork is available should a resolution be reached.
Because of the health threat related to COVID-19, Supreme Court Chief Justice Bridget McCormack promoted the service and explained its increased importance.
“Keeping the virtual doors of justice open to everyone in Michigan has never been more important,” she said in a statement to MLive. Opening up online dispute resolution to Oakland County residents represents a huge step toward achieving that goal.”
The court plans on continuing its expansion of the service throughout the state.
