State Representative Mike Harris has announced a roundtable event for small-business owners in north-central Oakland County, focused on the new requirements under Michigan’s Earned Sick Time Act. This roundtable, featuring a guest from the Michigan Chamber of Commerce, aims to help local businesses better understand the law's demands.

The event is scheduled for Monday, April 28, from 1 to 2 p.m., at the Shark Club, located at 6665 Highland Road in Waterford Township.

“I’m looking forward to bringing together Oakland County business owners and the pros from the Michigan Chamber of Commerce to discuss Michigan’s Earned Sick Time Act,” said Harris. “Thanks to the bipartisan compromise passed earlier this year, sick time rules now are fairer and clearer for both workers and small businesses. Employers are working carefully to follow the law, and I’m glad to connect local small-business owners with resources and information so they can have confidence that they’re complying with the law.”

The new rules, which expand earned sick time requirements for employers in Michigan, were enacted this February following a directive last summer from the Michigan Supreme Court. Harris noted that a bipartisan agreement was reached to offer clarity on the rules, preserving current paid time-off plans and easing compliance procedures for businesses and their employees. Importantly, businesses with 10 or fewer employees are given until October 1 to ensure compliance with the new requirements.

Business owners interested in participating in the discussion are encouraged to RSVP by emailing the representative’s office. Mike Harris serves the 52nd House District, which encompasses areas including Lake Angelus, Clarkston, and more parts of Springfield and Waterford townships.
