On December 25, 2022, at 8:40 pm, Officers from the Auburn Hills Police Department were dispatched to the Havenwyck Hospital at 1525 University Drive for a 911 call reporting a male threatening hospital staff. Upon arrival, the officers encountered a 25-year-old male, later identified as Jayru Campbell, holding his 2-year-old daughter and armed with a pair of scissors. Mr. Campbell was demanding that a family member be released from the hospital. Mr. Campbell threatened harm to the officers several times during the hour-long standoff. Officers on the scene were able to get Mr. Campbell to reason with them and drop the scissors. A short time later he released his daughter, to be taken to a safe location. Mr. Campbell complied with the officers and was arrested. Mr. Campbell was taken to the Oakland County Jail awaiting a review for charges of Felonious Assault and Child Abuse. The incident was resolved without any injuries.

“I commend the actions of our officers, who were on scene during this very dynamic situation,” said Ryan Gagnon, Chief of Police of the Auburn Hills Police Department. “The officers maintained their composure and used time and space, which allowed them to de-escalate the situation and negotiate with the person. We are grateful for the outcome and that no one was injured during this incident.”

On December 26, 2022, the report was presented to the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office for review. The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office authorized the following charges: One (1) count of Child Abuse 4th Degree, three (3) counts of Felonious Assault on a Police Officer, one (1) count of Disturbing the Peace, and one (1) count of Trespassing. The charge of Child Abuse 4th degree is a misdemeanor with the maximum penalty of 1 year in jail or probation for up to 5-years. Each count of Felonious Assault is a felony, which holds a penalty of 4 years in prison and/or a $2,000 fine. Disturbing the Peace is a misdemeanor, which holds a penalty of 90 days in jail and/or a $500 fine and Trespassing is a misdemeanor, which holds a penalty of 30 days in jail and/or a $250 fine.

On December 27, 2022, the Auburn Hills Detective in charge of the case swore to the warrants and set a time and date for arraignment to take place the next day.

On December 28, 2022, Mr. Campbell was arraigned on all charges in front of 52-3rd District Court, Judge Nicholson. Mr. Campbell’s bond was set at $30,000 cash, no/10%. A preliminary examination has been scheduled for January 17, 2023, at 9:00 am at the 52-3rd District Court in front of Judge Nicholson.
