Did you know the Royal Oak Woman's Club celebrated its 120th anniversary on Saturday November 12th?
The building, built in 1839 on Lafayette Street, was the first Baptist church and went on to be used by various other church organizations. From 1914 to 1923 the Club was the first village town hall becoming the first city hall in 1921 when Royal Oak achieved that status.
The building was moved in 1923 to to land donated by George Martin in honor of his wife, the first club president. (The 100 foot frontage was also an historical spot for it was here a blockhouse stood guarding a portion of the old Indian Trail from Detroit to Saginaw.)
Finally, in 1928 the building was moved to its current location at 404 S Pleasant Street.
In 1979, the Royal Oak Woman's Club was designated a Michigan Registered Historic Site (State of Michigan Historic Marker: L0679) and in 1999 the city designated it as its fourth historic district in the city.
Happy 120th Royal Oak Woman's Club!
