Cross Country Ready for Challenge at Mel Brodt Collegiate Open

On Friday, the Oakland University Men's and Women's Cross Country season will resume with the Mel Brodt Collegiate Open in Bowling Green, Ohio.

This will be the first time this fall campaign that the Golden Grizzlies will run 8,000 kilometers ( ~ five miles) for the men and 6,000 kilometers (3.73 miles) for the women as Oakland looks to continue momentum following fourth and second-place performances a week ago at the Mike Baumer XC Classic.

Following those performances, Yami Albrecht and Grace Nolan were named Nike #HLXC Runners of the Week by the conference office on September 7 with fifth and eighth-place finishes at the Mike Baumer XC Classic.

SCOUTING REPORT

In addition to Oakland and host Bowling Green, the Mel Brodt Collegiate Open will bring Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, and others. Last year's meet was a 5K test on both sides as the invite moves to the 8K/6K format for the first time since 2020.

The course will circle around the Mel Brodt Cross Country Course, a facility that has hosted anywhere between 5K to 10K races and served as the host to the 2020 MAC Cross Country Championships.

The Steve Price Women's 6K will start at 4:30 p.m. while The Bob Rothermel Men's 8K gun will fire at 5:15 p.m.

RUNNERS OF THE WEEK SWEEP

After only one meet on the course this season, Albrecht and Nolan earned Nike #HLXC Runners of the Week in the Horizon League's first edition this September.

NO. 1 ON THE COURSE

The Golden Grizzlies women's squad is predicted to win the Horizon League championship this October with the men's team slated for third overall.

RETURNING FORCE

Six of the top seven finishers for the men and five of the top seven for the women return to the team for the 2022 fall season.
