Lawrence Technological University welcomed what admissions officials said was the largest incoming freshman class in a generation in a Convocation ceremony Thursday evening.
More than 450 incoming first-year students and their families gathered on the University Quadrangle for presentations from LTU President Tarek M. Sobh and other s as they begin their experience in higher education.
Sobh congratulated the new students on their choice of LTU. He noted that over the past 90 years, enterprises established by LTU alumni “have provided a livelihood for millions of people across the country and around the world.” He also pointed to several college rankings and surveys showing LTU graduates can look forward to ample career opportunities and rewarding salaries. “We prepare students for jobs that haven’t been created yet,” Sobh said.
Guest speaker Sean English, the son of a long-time LTU staff member, inspired the crowd with the story of his recovery from a horrific 2017 traffic wreck when, acting as a Good Samaritan to injured motorists, he was struck by an impaired driver and lost part of his leg. English called “everything will be fine … one of the biggest lies that has ever been told.” But he said that with help and perseverance , “it’ll be OK, and it’s OK to not be OK.”
LTU Student Government President JuJuan Jones also urged the new students to get involved in LTU student activities, and to adopt the attitude that “’no’ can mean ‘not yet.’”
