Olawoyinaward 2022 1280

Oakland University Industrial and Systems Engineering Professor Richard Olawoyin was recognized by the American Society of Safety Professionals with the 2021-2022 Charles V. Culbertson Outstanding Volunteer Service Award.

The honor recognizes society members whose services and activities within the last 12 months have made a positive impact on the organization and led to measurable, significant and recognizable accomplishments. Recipients are nominated by board members of the ASSP.

Dr. Olawoyin received the award June 26, at the ASSP Leaders and Honorees Celebration in Chicago, in recognition of exemplary service as administrator of ASSP’s Environmental Practice Specialty from 2020-2022. He served as assistant administrator from 2018-2020.

“I feel humbled to receive this prestigious recognition twice in four years from ASSP for my professional service,” said Dr. Olawoyin, who also received the award in 2019.

“As an elected leader, I am happy to have led change working with our community. I cannot underestimate the importance of inclusive leadership, he continued. “Energizing our members to remain actively engaged in the profession through the worst pandemic in our lifetime seemed impossible; however, we resolved to focus on developing programs that align with individual members' interests and availability. The outcome is a reimagined, diverse, and equitable professional practice. I am grateful to all our volunteer leaders and the ASSP staff for making the efforts invested successful.”

As the administrator of ASSP’s Environmental Practice Specialty, Dr. Olawoyin served as an elected leader on the organization’s Council on Practice and Standards (CoPS), he serves on the Educational Standards Committee, and he is an ASSP Author.

For more than 100 years, the ASSP has supported occupational safety and health professionals in their efforts to prevent workplace injuries, illnesses, and fatalities. The organization provides education, advocacy, standards development, and a professional community to its members in order to advance their careers and the occupational safety and health profession as a whole.
