Oakland County issued the following announcement on Feb. 19.
In a salute to Presidents Day, qualified residents may adopt a dog or cat for just $25 - plus the cost of a license for dogs - from the Oakland County Animal Shelter and Pet Adoption Center Tuesday, Feb. 22 - Friday, Feb. 25 from 10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. All adoptions are by appointment only. To schedule an appointment, call the Pet Adoption Center at 248-858-4647. The shelter is closed on Presidents Day.

Forty-three of 46 U.S. presidents had pets during their presidencies. President George Washington owned more than 50 dogs during his lifetime. When a reporter asked First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln whether her husband, President Abraham Lincoln, had a hobby, she replied, "Cats." President Franklin D. Roosevelt was so attached to his dog, Fala, that a statue of Fala was added to the FDR memorial in Washington, D.C. Follow their example and give a pet a new, loving home.

Since 1980, the Oakland County Animal Shelter and Pet Adoption Center has been helping animals by providing shelter and care while at the same time attempting to reunite them with their owners or to find new, loving homes. The shelter handles more than 4,000 animals per year. The new state of the art shelter is located at 1200 North Telegraph, Building 42 East, in the city of Pontiac on the Oakland County Government campus.
