Oakland County Health Division Partnering with Schools to Offer Pfizer Booster Doses to Teens

Booster

Oakland County issued the following announcement on Jan. 14.

Oakland County Health Division will offer Pfizer booster doses of COVID-19 vaccine for teens in partnership with some schools as new cases continue to surge. The first scheduled clinics will be at Reuther Middle School in Rochester Hills from 4-6 p.m. on Jan. 19 and at Berkley High School in Berkley from 4-6 p.m. on Jan. 20. Health Division will also accept appointments for children who still need to complete their primary series doses. To schedule an appointment at an upcoming clinic, click on OaklandCountyVaccine.com or contact the Nurse on Call at 800-848-5533.

Confirmed and probable cases in Oakland County exceeded 29,000 from Dec. 27 – Jan. 9 while the seven-day percent positivity rate for COVID-19 tests jumped to 33.18 percent, both records for the county. Residents 18 years old or younger account for one in five new cases in Oakland County but less than one in 25 residents who have received booster or third doses.

"Teens are the fastest-growing population being infected with COVID-19," Health Division Medical Director Dr. Russell Faust said. "Teens should get vaccinated for all doses they are eligible for – including the booster dose. Vaccines help prevent infection and keep teens in school, sports, and other group activities. They also reduce the risk of hospitalization, Multiple Inflammatory Syndrome in Children, and chronic complications from COVID infection."

The county's seven-day case average was 2,400 new cases per day as of Jan. 11 after peaking at 2,500 new cases per day on Jan. 9. Oakland County saw a one-day record of 3,778 new cases on Jan. 7. The total number of cases in Oakland County since the beginning of the pandemic passed 200,000 this week.

More than 295,000 Oakland County residents remain unvaccinated, about 104,000 of whom are 18 years old or younger. Oakland County Health Division continues to administer pediatric, first, second, third, and booster doses for all eligible residents, including at its North Oakland Health Center in Pontiac and South Oakland Health Center in Southfield.

The Health Division is also offering drive-through testing for COVID-19 four days a week. To make an appointment or for more information, go to oakgov.com/COVID and click on the COVID Testing button or contact the Nurse on Call.
