Date: December 2, 2021

The Department of Art and Art History Presents…

Art and Environmental Struggle: Spotlighting Indigenous and Place-Based Perspectives

with Dr. Andrew C. Weislogel

The Johnson Museum’s current exhibition Art and Environmental Struggle brings together the work of twenty artists representing regions around the world that are experiencing some of the most acute consequences of climate disruption and resource extraction. Developed in conjunction with an international conference on Ecological calendars, the exhibition calls attention to the effects of environmental degradation on the food production, security, and cultural independence of communities that have contributed least to the crisis. The compelling ways in which artists confront these topics through the expression of Indigenous ecological knowledge, environmental stewardship, and place-rooted traditions represent a diverse but resilient perspective on this most universally human of issues. Dr. Weislogel will speak about the process of developing the exhibition and will highlight selected works for discussion.

Andrew C. Weislogel is the Seymour R. Askin, Jr. Curator of Earlier European and American Art at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art, Cornell University. He also oversees its collections of Indigenous North American and Australian art.
