Lawrence Technological University issued the following announcement on Nov. 15.
Lawrence Technological University’s College of Business and Information Technology is hosting the Michigan DECA High School conference and competition Friday, Dec. 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on the University’s Southfield campus.
DECA, formerly known as the Distributive Education Clubs of America, is an organization for emerging leaders in marketing, management, finance, hospitality, and entrepreneurship. An anticipated 600 high school students from the Detroit area will role-play real-world business situations, from marketing plans to business law cases to entrepreneurial pitches at the competition.
Professionals with business experience are now being sought to serve as judges during the conference. All registered judges will receive detailed information and a thorough orientation onsite before competition begins, and breakfast and lunch will be provided. About 100 judges are being recruited. Judges are asked to arrive by 8:30 a.m. on the day of the event, Dec. 17. Upon arrival, judges will receive a welcome packet and an orientation presentation for their role. They will then meet their event director for further instructions. Those judging events with written entries will begin evaluating them at that time. Most judges will also evaluate role-playing exercises and presentations, where students will present their case study solutions, business plans, or projects to the judges. The judges will then score the presentations based on a rubric that will be provided to them.
“The business leaders of tomorrow are educated at the LTU College of Business and Information Technology, so hosting this competition of potential future LTU students is a natural for us,” said Bahman Mirshab, CoBIT dean. “We welcome the competitors and wish them the best of luck in their presentations, and we thank the LTU faculty, staff, alumni, and friends who will give generously of their time to stage this competition.”
