Oakland University issued the following announcement on Oct. 14.

WISER (Women in Science, Engineering, and Research) at Oakland University will host an in-person screening of the documentary, “Picture a Scientist,” from 1-3 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 5 in Founders Ballroom C in the Oakland Center.

The film chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. Biologist Nancy Hopkins, chemist Raychelle Burks, and geologist Jane Willenbring lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, ranging from brutal harassment to years of subtle slights.

Along the way, from cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, viewers encounter scientific luminaries — including social scientists, neuroscientists, and psychologists — who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

“’Picture a Scientist’ sheds light on important issues facing female faculty,” said Leanne Papke, program coordinator for WISER at OU. “Through bringing the film to campus and engaging in a discussion with faculty in scientific fields, we hope to encourage members of the Oakland University community to become an active part of the national conversation and advocate for women in STEM.”

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion from 3-4 p.m. with women in STEM from OU, including:

• Dr. Britt Rios-Ellis, executive vice president for academic affairs and provost;

• Dr. Amy Banes-Berceli, associate professor of biological sciences and interim associate provost;

• Dr. Martha Escobar, professor of psychology;

• Dr. Sara Blumer-Schuette, associate professor of biological sciences and bioengineering.
