Auburn Hills Police Department issued the following announcement on Aug. 19.
The Auburn Hills Police Department has recently seen a significant increase in street racing and excessive speeds on our surface streets and freeways in our community. The activity is dangerous and has resulted in several crashes. Tragically, on Sunday, August 15, 2021, at 1:30 am, a 20-year-old man from Rochester Hills was killed when he failed to negotiate a curve on southbound I-75 at the Chrysler exit ramp. The vehicle was modified with high performance enhancements and was traveling at an extremely high rate of speed. The vehicle rolled and the driver was ejected from the vehicle. Tragically he died at the scene. Our officers had the unfortunate duty to contact this young man’s parents to inform them of the death of their 20-year-old son. We do not want to deliver another message like this.
This weekend is the Woodward Dream Cruise, which brings in car enthusiasts from all over the United States to our region for an incredible event. We want everyone to have a great time and show off their cars but do so in a safe and responsible manner.
Car enthusiast and motorists are being warned that the Auburn Hills Police Department has zero tolerance for street racing in Auburn Hills. Those responsible for street racing and/or excessive speeds will be charged with Reckless Driving and will have their vehicle impounded. Additional police officers will be out on the roads conducting traffic enforcement. We want everyone to enjoy their time safely out on the roads and we will take necessary steps to enforce the law to prevent unnecessary and tragic deaths from occurring.
Please be safe and enjoy the Dream Cruise experience in a responsible manner.
