Oakland County issued the following announcement on Aug. 12.
Oakland County Health Division reminds parents and guardians that getting their children 12 years old and older immunized against COVID-19 will help provide a safer start to the upcoming school year as new COVID-19 cases, including the Delta variant, are on the rise.
“We are seeing a direct correlation between new COVID-19 cases in Oakland County and residents who remain unvaccinated, especially with the Delta variant,” Oakland County Medical Director Dr. Russell Faust said. “One of the most effective ways to minimize transmission of COVID-19 in schools this coming school year is to get children 12 and up immunized.”
Of the nearly 1,400 new COVID-19 cases in Oakland County from July 21-August 3, about one in six were 18 years old or younger while one quarter were between the ages of 19 and 29 years old. As of August 10, the seven-day case average for new COVID-19 cases in Oakland County was 147 cases per day, or more than 1,000 new cases per week.
Meanwhile, about 45 percent of the more than 121,000 Oakland County residents ages 12-19 years old have not yet received their first dose. Similarly, 43 percent of the approximately 161,000 Oakland County residents ages 20-29 years old remain unvaccinated. In other words, nearly 124,000 residents between the ages of 12 and 29 years old are not immunized against COVID-19, despite the county having a COVID-19 vaccine coverage of 71.2 percent for residents 16 years old and older and nearly 70 percent for residents 12 years old and older.
