Seeing 80 percent of Oakland County adults achieve some type of postsecondary training is an “aspirational” goal for County Executive David Coulter (D). The county’s postsecondary completion is currently at 61 percent, according to the Detroit Free Press.
Specific plans for hitting that goal have not yet been determined but are being hammered out by representatives from the county and area colleges and universities.
An obvious way to boost the postsecondary completion rate is to convince students who left college without a degree or certificate to return. Often, though, students who leave an institution before graduation leave with debt.
Henry Ford College, Oakland Universities and Wayne State are trying to ease that debt for those who want to return. The schools last year expanded the debt forgiveness program for returning students, says the Detroit Free Press. Typically, students can’t re-enroll until their debts are paid off. Now, a student willing to participate in the debt-forgiveness program can re-enroll despite carrying debt.
The amount of debt forgiveness varies by school, but some offer a set dollar amount of debt forgiveness while others offer a percentage.
