“We give billions of tax dollars to communist-run non profits that pay their very profitable board members half a million a year,” said Maddock, State Representative from Michigan. “Michigan tax dollars fund 435 of them.”
Michigan’s state funding for nonprofits, particularly those serving the homeless, has increased significantly in recent years. Lawmakers have approved record funding amid rising needs and heightened scrutiny over executive compensation and political connections. According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, more than 250 nonprofits received state support for homeless services in 2023. The total annual funding exceeded $115 million, reflecting expanded allocations for shelters, housing, and supportive programs.
Crain’s Detroit Business reports that executive compensation at Michigan’s largest state-funded nonprofits often exceeds $300,000 per year. This closely matches national averages for large nonprofits but has triggered legislative review and concern about the balance between administrative expenses and direct services.
