Matt Maddock, Republican House Representative for Michigan’s 51st District, said Sanctuary city policies enable the harboring of offenders through non-cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

“Communist Sanctuary Cities legalize and protect rapists, murderers, child sex traffickers and drug lords,” said Maddock. “Why is this? What is the end goal for the democrats and communists here? Kommies. Please chime in here.”

In a post on X, Maddock said that “communist” sanctuary cities legalize and shield serious criminals, including rapists, murderers, child sex traffickers, and drug lords. He questioned the motivations behind these policies and invited followers to share their perspectives. According to Maddock, replies referenced specific Michigan jurisdictions such as Washtenaw County, highlighting how sanctuary policies are applied in Democratic-led areas.

Michigan includes several sanctuary jurisdictions like Ingham, Kalamazoo, Kent, Oakland, Washtenaw, and Wayne counties. Cities such as East Lansing and Lansing have also adopted sanctuary resolutions. East Lansing’s resolution in 2023 aimed to affirm protections for immigrants and limit local involvement in federal enforcement. Detroit and Ann Arbor maintain welcoming policies that restrict police from inquiring about immigration status unless related to criminal investigations.

The United States has over 600 sanctuary jurisdictions across 12 states with statewide policies and numerous cities and counties limiting cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. States including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington restrict local resources from aiding detainers or information sharing with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). These measures aim to foster community trust but have drawn federal scrutiny for potentially shielding criminal aliens.

Maddock has served in the Michigan House of Representatives since 2019. He represents the 51st District after an initial term in the 44th District. Maddock owns A-1 Bail Bonds and has experience as a bail bondsman, private investigator, court officer, and process server. He resides in Milford with his wife Meshawn Maddock and their three children.
