The Michigan House of Representatives has approved a resolution introduced by Rep. Mike Harris, recognizing September 11-17, 2024, as Patriot Week. This period commemorates both the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks and the September 17, 1787 approval of the U.S. Constitution by convention delegates in Philadelphia.

Rep. Harris emphasized the importance of honoring the nation’s commitment to liberty and equality, along with acknowledging the service and sacrifice that have defended these ideals. “Patriot Week is an occasion to celebrate the values that make our country great — freedom, equality, and self-government,” said Harris, R-Waterford. He further noted that it is a time for reflection on the service and sacrifice that keep the nation free.

The resolution was passed last Wednesday by voice vote during the House’s only session day in September. It underscores the necessity of understanding U.S. history and first principles for maintaining freedom in America. The resolution states: “We recognize that understanding the history of the United States and the first principles of the United States is indispensable to the survival of the United States as a free people; acknowledge in great reverence to the victims of the September 11, 2001, attacks, that citizens of the United States should take time to honor…”

It also encourages citizens, schools, educational institutions, as well as federal, state, and local governments to participate in Patriot Week activities focused on honoring and studying U.S. history.
